Well, I won the mycurl comp!

And, I'd like to send out a big "thank you xx" to my model, Chelsea, and photographer, Jacquie (Red Eclipse) and MUA, Niki Gorissen. What a team! I guess you're wondering what the prize was...? Well ... I was asked to fly to Sydney and work with the Alterna team on the Alex Perry show for RAFW on May 2, which received an enormous amount of publicity. The team, lead by Dario Controneo, were extremely professional: a well oiled machine, alongside a very exuberant Napoleon Perdis.
After the Alex Perry gig it was off to Iceberg's at Bondi to work with the eponymous Renya Xydis on the Kirrily Johnston show. Now this was hardcore. Everything you'd expect: champagne, Samantha Harris, MAC's top MUAs, and a view to die for. Then, back on a flight home to my valued Rokstar clients (who not only love me, but feed me too!). Both of these shows have recently been published in Grazia magazine if you're keen to check out more.

Speaking of publishing.... My bridal collection has been alerting editors all over the globe, and I'm so proud that it is in the process of being published in Canadian Hairdresser! Can't wait to share it with you.

And now for the tawdry gossip: Geordie (Red Hill) is actually a real-life DJ! Who knew! And, apparently, he's quite good at it too!

Most of our team have also been working through ALL of their spare time to produce the best quality photoshoots we've ever done. We're submitting them in the international Wella Trend Vision competition, and hopefully (fingers crossed!) at least one or two or three of us will make it to the national finals in Sydney in September....

September will also be a wild month for me. I'm taking my three boys to London for a micro holiday before working on the Sass and Bide show for London Fashion Week. Wish me luck!

I've also just (only a moment ago) sent off an entry into another competition for mycurl (above).

You might think I'm jumping the gun, by showing you before any else gets a look, but... the truth is, I'd love your opinion. I'm determined to do well this year, and I have a lot to look forward to. There's fashion weeks in Sydney and London, not to mention working for Wella throughout Australia. So, give me hand, let me know what kind of work you'd like to see. What's going to seal the deal?

Hobart, Brides, Staff changes, and my thesis

Today is Jemima's birthday.
You may or may not know Jemima, but she worked alongside me for five years, and I now consider her a friend (rare, I assure you...). She's hardworking, talented, beautiful, but not as confident as I know she will be after the big 3-0. She should be loving herself sick. Jemima has landed an amazing job as a Technician for Wella in their London office. Yep, this girl's got talent...and she never really knew it, until now.
And, I guess, I've always felt the same way. Nothing is ever good enough, or bold enough, or cool enough. But, maybe I'm wrong, and maybe I need to be a little more proud of myself too. So, here's my attempt at showing off!

Staff changes
I can see why my clients would feel nervous when there's movement in the team, but does every young person have to stay in one place forever? Have you? I have had really long term people, like Jem and Jemima and Angela, and really short term, but fantastic people who will remain close, like Jen. Yes, Jen is going away...:( but she'll be joining her newly caught husband in country Victoria as he begins his teaching career. We'll miss her terribly, but I'm so pleased that Richard has a great job, and his loving wife by his side xxx

This means we have a new Salon Manager in West End......(drum roll....) DAVID! It's so exciting to see how far David has come in such a short time, but he has a huge year ahead. Master of Colour, which is a year-long commitment, and plenty of training for his new role. Here's a sample of what he's been up to lately:

My thesis
I'm back at UQ in about a week to begin following another passion: 18th century women's writing. I cannot believe this is crossing over, but somehow, the Romantic period is creeping its way into my hairdressing...

Well, I've just returned from Hair Expo in Sydney, and what a great time it was! I was lucky enough to be able to assist the Sasson team with their show! They are amazing.... 45 years of creating and re-creating classic looks has culminated into an artistic team who are unbeatable. This year I saw perming, bucket loads of yellow, brand new Moroccan Oil products, and some great new makeup brushes. I can't wait to share it with you in the salon.

Angela and I attended a fabulous show at the Ivy to launch some new products at Wella, which showcased new System Professional products, brand new shiny colours, and a new range in Sebastian called Volupt. Volupt combined volume and shine, and will be available at the beginning of August 2010. We also witnessed the winning entry for the Face of Lakme competition (pale pink and chocolate).

Jemima's been busy again with a shoot for Gold Coast designer, Indigo Joker. I've been helping designer, Tovah Cottel, who just won the 1st and 3rd places in Fashions on the Field. David and Angela have been working hard on their Wella Trend Vision competition entries (Good Luck!). We find out whether they have made the finals on July 5th, so keep all of your appendages crossed...

As I write this blog, Jemima and Angela are at the Wella Studio in Brisbane helping hairdressing greats Joey Sacandizzo, Renya Xydis and Vincent Nobile prep their models for an amazing event at Cloudlands club in the Valley to showcase the latest innovations at Wella - can't wait!

Morooccan oil is really taking the world by storm and we're really exciting about the upcoming release of some new Moroccan Oil products, especially the curling balm, which is fantastic when scrunched into wavy hair for an "on the go" styling technique.

Getting back into it!

Well, after a lovely break that enabled me to focus on motherhood, I'm really keen to get back into it. And what has inspired me? The beginning of the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week: http://rafw.com.au
I have been really enjoying following the pictures taken by our friends at Red Eclipse; however, as much as I love being able to keep up with the latest looks online, it's just not as exciting as being there in amongst it!

In my absence, the team having been working on some great looks for Nelson Molloy (see pic above) and Indigo Joker, and also producing some excellent competition work.

Whilst we chat about it in the salon occasionally, I do feel like there are so many things that we achieve, in our own time, that people are just not aware of. This is a fantastic forum to show you how talented the Rokstar team really is, and how committed and passionate we are about our art - wearable, malleable, ever-changing art. An example of this can be seen in a shoot that I did recently did hair for Gail Sorronda, shot by Amber Toms (see pic right).

Another great opportunity was the release of Indigo Joker's first commercial collection that Jemima and I were asked to work on. We LOVED hanging out in a hanger! (pic below left)

Another well of creativity is bubbling up with our newest team members: Em, David and Tom. I have to admit that I've had an almost visible problem with Gen-Y for quite some time now, but I'm constantly being proven wrong. Really wrong. These people are vibrant, committed, and have so much talent oozing through their veins. It's exciting to be allowed to help guide them because, inevitably, they end up guiding me by expecting me to give my best, and then give a little more. What an exciting future!

Here are some great shots recently done by Angela, David and Em that feature clothing by Nelson Molloy. They were shot in my husband's workshop, which is called Ralph's Garage, in West End.

So, thanks for reading my first blog. I'd like to use this space to share with you the things that inspire us to push beyond just going to work every day. These things are all about love, not money, and we feel blessed to be able to work with like-minded people.
